WAWA 2026 was trully a delight!
Hello friends! Hope you’re all doing well and staying inspired!
I’ve been a bit quiet since wrapping up Adventure April because: new job, new schedule, and still figuring out how life fits together again. But I couldn’t not come back to say this…
This year’s WAWA absolutely blew me away!
First, seeing so many friends from this community getting nominated and winning? Unreal. You know who you are and you’re all incredible <3
And then… my own work won!
My Aether Train article won in Pillars of Progress, and I’m so happy it came from a world I genuinely love building. I am so grateful to anyone that voted for it!
And then came the part I still haven’t fully processed: Fate’s Misfits won Most Beautiful World.
I… genuinely didn’t expect that. At all. This world means a lot to me, it started as a game and grew into something much bigger, a web of stories, moments, and shared experiences. Seeing it recognized like this is… yeah. I’m still catching up to it.
I’m just really, really grateful.
Huge congratulations to all the winners, this year was stacked with amazing work. And of course, a massive thank you to the STC for the constant support, kindness, and chaos we all share <3

Springtime Joy Achieves Victory!
I'm endlessly proud and overjoyed to share that Festival of Blooms earned this year's Heart & Minds award! This article, fittingly, came from the heart — as someone who withers in winter and blossoms again in the warmth of spring, I wanted to capture the feeling of revival, excitement, and delight when the days grow longer and the breeze feels like a hug instead of a bite.
Flowers are a big source of happiness for me, and some of my friends here may be able to confirm, as I've sent out many delighted snapshots of the tiny blooms that have popped up since spring finally hit us this year!

I'm so proud to say my entry, the Glassy Trench, won the Wondrous Nature award <3 It feels like a full circle moment for me. Child me, who rolled around in fields and forests watching insects hop about, birdwatching with my grandad, and peering into rockpools to look at the pretty little crabs in the water, would be ecstatic to know he's now telling the stories he always dreamed of telling, creating worlds full of life, and sharing his imagination with the world. Thank you to everyone who saw something in my article, and as a writer <3

The World Anvil Worldbuilding Awards winners are announced in just a few hours now...
Good luck to all of the nominees! It's a huge honour to be nominated, and I am proud of everyone. I'm in such good company nominated alongside friends and writers I look up to, and I'm super excited to hear who wins. I know even if I don't win, another wonderful writer is going to win, so there's no loss in this situation!
This is my fourth time entering the Worldbuilding Awards, and the first time I've been nominated for an article! It was always a dream of mine to have an article nominated, so I'm proud of myself <3 It's very important to be proud of oneself, fight those brain goblins!

Hello World Anvil I come bearing the gift of STATS!
I started the WAWA voting season off with a back injury. A mild one - I'll be fine in another day or two - but I opted to distract myself from it with the tedium of data entry. I assembled a spreadsheet of all WAWA awards, nominees, worlds, and winners since the first one in 2020. The numbers paint a very interesting picture...
The Conclusion
WAWA 2026 has the broadest array of nominees in the history of WAWA
2026 has continued the upward climb of unique Worlds, authors, and new nominees from the past two years, reaching levels comparable to lockdown-era WA. And unlike prior years, the top-nominated spot is spread across seven people.

The Support
Data
I used the list on Learn to compile all this, but there are a couple caveats:
- Due to missing links from past years, I wasn't able to get all author names or all World names. I gathered what info I could (with help).
- There's at least one case where the winner announced on stream isn't the winner on the Best Of or Learn pages. I kept with what's written.
- The blog has two Best of 2019 posts, but the format was too different and info too sparse to include in my data.
Stats
You'll see 2023 is missing from my tables below. Prior to 2024, the competition was named for the prior year because all submissions had to be from that year. So WAWA 2022 featured articles made in 2022 but was held in 2023. The time restriction was removed for 2024, and the event name was changed to the year it was held in.
Nominees
This table shows the number of unique worlds and unique authors among each year's nominees, along with the total number of first-time nominees that year. As you can see, 2021 was a stand-out year for participation, likely due to everyone being stuck in lockdown. Participation dropped afterward, but 2026 gets close to lockdown numbers.

I kept roughly to top 5, with fewer or more as made sense for the data. Most people who've won a worldbuilding award have only won 1 (so far). It's fun to look at those who win a lot, but they're the exceptions, not the norm.

Closing Thoughts
WAWA has continually evolved since its start. This year's changes have given us greater diversity in our nominees and eliminated the popularity contest while still giving the community a voice in what our favorite articles are. The industry judges make the biggest categories feel that much more special.
We're likely to continue seeing familiar names among nominees - exceptional worldbuilders will keep being exceptional - but it's refreshing to not have a single name sweep the competition. However, the World awards are an area of potential improvement. While I have thoughts on that, this isn't the post to share them.
There's still room to grow, but that's true of all of us. With my back injury healing, I'm itching to start reviewing nominees and making my own votes. I can't wait for the awards ceremony this year, and to see how WAWA continues to change in the future.

One of my favourite articles, Keystones, is in the running for Best Article of 2026! This is the biggest category I've ever been up for, and my first time in the big leagues. We won a newcomer category during the first Worldbuilding Awards, with Solaris being awarded the Most Beautiful New World, and we've tried to keep the iron hot. In 2023, we won Best Body of Work in Worldember 2023. Could this be the year where Solaris snags a spot in the sky alongside the heroes of World Anvil?
For those of you new to Solaris , it's a space opera set in our little solar system, inspired by mythology and the wonder of looking up at the stars. It's been a sparkly crystal paradise, up until the angelic armies of the sun attacked and laid Mercury to waste.
I write Solaris alongside my cowriter and fiancée Skye. All the art for Solaris is drawn by me in MS Paint, and I made my own theme. No AI or LLMs are involved in any step of the process. I can do all of this because of the wealth of knowledge shared here on the internet, so I try to do my part in sharing what I know as well. You can find a bunch of guides by me in the Post Script of Solaris, as well as links to resources I use, and I've been trying to update all my articles with a authors note about my inspirations.
This year I also got my second nomination for Strength & Honor with Operation War Dove, the article that gave me my first ever win on World Anvil when it was picked as the winning conflict article that Summer Camp. The overview of the tech of my setting, Crystal Technology, was also nominated for Pillars of Progress. Both of these categories are voted on by you, and I highly recommend you check out all the articles and vote on your favourite!

Hello everyone
First, I want to say Congratulations to all the #WAWA Nominees for their works being chosen for the voting phase! Sadly, I didn't get nominated this time around so I'm a little bit disappointed. Still, I was good that I took the plunge this year. On the flip side, I can FINALLY edit those articles I've been eager to tweak for weeks now.
With SummerCamp 2026 coming up soon, I'll have prep time before things get rolling. I've got some interesting ideas that I'm toying with. Let's just say that I want to add some "character" in my world (hint, hint)
I think that's all I will reveal for the time being. Looking forward to what the future may hold.

The WAWA 2026 nominees have been revealed, and I am absolutely thrilled to see my work land in two categories!! It’s always a shock to be included alongside such amazing creators and stunning worlds.
First of all, my newest world, Fate’s Misfits, has been nominated for the Most Beautiful World category! This project fills me with so much joy, as it’s a world and story I’ve experienced around the table. The characters live vividly in my mind, each with their own unique lives, and I’m so happy to be able to share them with all of you here.
Then I saw that my Aether Train article has been nominated for the Pillars of Progress category, and I’m incredibly grateful! Crux Umbra is a very different world from the others I write, and my personal favorite. I’m over the moon to see this ghost train arrive here!
Congratulations to all the nominees, as well as to everyone who submitted their work! And a huge thank you to the amazing WA team for the effort they put into reading all these entries. It certainly couldn’t have been easy to choose!

Dragonguard Progress Report (DPR-19)

I added a Guides category to Root Directory; I totally forgot about the Character Traits article I had, and it wasn't linked anywhere. Oops.
Haven’t done much this month, but I eventually started trying to design a logo / coat of arms for the Dragonguard, using the Eldryan Sword. I’ve also been slowly updating the Dragonguard’s article to better explain its structure and operation.
Oh, and AAHH Worldbuilding Awards 2026 submissions have ended! I did not know which ones to submit this year, but I eventually got there. Looking back, I've noticed that many of my articles are incomplete to some degree and don’t feel like they have a strong chance of competing in these events. So, I went through and picked ones that I felt were actually good and could do well. With that said, I've only submitted 3 articles for WAWA this year.
Also, Legends of the Dragonguard turns 2 at the end of this month! And it’s almost at 100 followers :)

I have finished my submissions for #WAWA2026 after updating my world's theme (and recovering from a sprained knee after being a bit overzealous at the gym...definitely hurts as much as you can imagine. Free advice: if you do any intensive reps of Machine Leg Press, skip the cardio on the gym bike. Thank me later).

Woo, 2026 New Year's Resolutions have been made! Not too much worldbuilding done this past month because I was reading a lot of your guys’ stuff. But I did add some navboxes and category pages to my /dev/null world, so hopefully that will make it easier to navigate. I also added navboxes to my Root Directory challenge hub world.
I do not know what I’ll be submitting to the Worldbuilding Awards, if anything, but I’ll probably have a think and polish up some things this month.
Side note, so close to 100 followers on Legends of the Dragonguard!! It’s at 93 as of writing this. :)

The Owlworks makes its Youtube (re)debut!
It only took an age and a half, but the winds of creation finally found themselves beneath my wings! Behold, my first vlog!
I took a years-long Youtube hiatus, and now we're BACK — starting with a new writer vlog series where I take you through month-by-month adventures in the Owlworks! Art Completion
The monster art for our campaign guide is nearing completion. Yury Nikifarau has killed it with all his creepy and wondrous interpretations of our creatures. He is nearing 1000 subs on YouTube and streams daily. If you haven’t shown him some love, please consider it.
New Campaign
My playgroup and I are starting a new campaign soon. I am GMing and everyone is getting amped up. We have game zero this Saturday. Debating how to keep track of the story outside the game. Currently thinking I’ll do it through in-game news articles and maybe a blog after each session. I want my players to get online and write as well, so hopefully a bit of immersion will encourage them to do so.

Awww unbelievable!
I really can't believe that one of my articles made it onto the nomination list and I'm very happy about it. Thank you to everyone who voted my Mirror Cloud Paths into the 2nd round for Wondrous Nature. I know it won't be easy to win. Dromaria is back with another installment of our From the Village Vault series: The Running of the Buffalo. The goblins have had their day, now it’s the buffalo’s turn. Survive the mayhem and be richly rewarded, or be trampled by the stampede.
This is the 26th free 5e adventure we have crafted for Dromaria and we are approaching enough to complete our chronicles book compiling them all so far. Each one spotlights a piece of our Southern Tritos Dominion.
In other news, only 8 days remain in the first round of the World Anvil Worldbuilder Awards. We have submitted to several categories and are hoping to advance as far as we can. This year I drew a map. By hand and then in photoshop for the first time, in a very very long time. And I'm still really happy with the result - it kickstarted the world of Dlynaeth for me! Every time I run out of inspiration, I look at my map and fill in a new little thing, a new seed from which to worldbuild.

WAWA, Old Articles with a New Look!
Before you spans the tropical regions of Alkelbulan, from the radiant sands of Shamsi to the lush rainforests of Musi Kongo! The westernmost reaches of the Shamsi Desert are laden with light magic, preserving the ancient memories of early humanity and their tumultuous empires. These luminous regions project illusions of the past and solar waters breath life into arid territories, the land as unforgiving as the gods when humanity has dared to betray them! Most impressive is the divine seat of the goddess of light herself, Lithmor, which rises into the sky with the sun and settles into Mount Ararat in the night. It is a marvel of both solar magic and human ingenuity.
While west Shamsi is a land painted by its rich history, political events in Musi Kongo roll forward each day! The Kingdom of Accia encroaches into these vibrant forests, raiding villages and kidnapping Bakongo children to strengthen their armies. These peaceful, reclusive tribes are almost defenseless... until warriors from the Tawantinsuyu Empire appeared and made a stand against these northern invaders! This Tawantinsuyu fellowship pushes back against the relentless forces of the kingdom, finding haven in a peculiar treetop city. Pakaysacha blends the cultures of the Tawantinsuyu with the local Bakongo tribes. The latter flock to the city for protection, embraced by the branches of sentient and mobile trees the region is so well known for! Meanwhile their guardians, the Chaqukpa Runankuna, possess rare and powerful beast magic and loyally follow Chakuq Supay who is otherwise known as The Huntsman. But there is one question on everyone's mind: how long can they keep the kingdom at bay?

Is that a voting widget I see? That can only mean one thing... WAWA is in full swing! I'm equal parts thrilled and terrified, but I pushed through the anxiety and uncertainty to bring you my proudest works of the past year or so, for your consideration this Awards season!

So, another new experience begins for me, as this is my first WAWA. Every World Anvil challenge so far has left me feeling excited and grateful to be part of it. But to be honest, the Worldbuilding Awards initially felt daunting. It’s one thing to showcase your work and another to pledge it in a competition seeking the best of the best. I don’t know if this is impostor syndrome or simply self-doubt, but here we are.
Yet, since joining this beautiful community and witnessing all the good it has done for my mind and soul, I made a promise to myself- to embrace opportunities and let go of fear. With that in mind, I entered the awards with a light heart and a single thought:
This is not about the competition
I see WAWA as a celebration of our shared passion. Worldbuilding and storytelling are what keep the child in me alive, and I know the same is true for many other Anvilites. So, I entered for that child- to make it proud, to teach it courage, and to show it the value of what it creates. I’ve put together this overview article of everything I submitted for WAWA 2025. Make sure to check the Author’s Notes, where I’ve listed every overview I found from fellow Anvilites. Don’t forget to visit their articles as well and share some love! New year, new goals and a new world!
Hello, fellow worldbuilders and dreamers!
This year, I decided to take the leap and do something that I’d never imagine I would do. With the encouragement of this amazing and wholesome community, I finally overcame my second thoughts and went all in for World Anvil’s Worldbuilding Awards 2025 (WAWA)! I’m thrilled to share that my main high fantasy world, Kena'an, has been submitted for the Best Newcomer category! This world has been my labor of love for many years, and the decision to submit it was both exciting and nerve-wracking. But that’s not all! Some of my favorite articles have also been entered into the following categories: Best Worldbuilding Article (The Suntouched), Hearts and Minds (Dreamcrest Weaving), Rise of Nations (Tir' naru), Wondrous Nature (Onyx Luna). I'll be honest. I don’t expect to go far in the competition- there are so many talented creators here- but entering itself feels like a victory. It’s helped me see the value in my work and given me the confidence to share it with all of you.But wait, there’s more! With the new year comes a brand-new world: Crux Umbra.
Crux Umbra is a dark fantasy, post-apocalyptic setting inspired by many genres that I adore. It’s a world of vampires, magic, ancient prophecies, and above all, the enduring mortal will to survive. It’s been a challenge to exercise patience (not exactly my strongest suit), but I’m excited and confident to finally share a first glimpse of this new creation with you all.
2025 is already shaping up to be an incredible year, and I can’t wait to continue this journey. Your support means the world, and I’m so grateful to be part of such an inspiring and welcoming space.

The Yonderverse has juuuust hit 900,000 words, I'm so close to 1 million! I think I'll hit it in the later half of 2025, unless I can speed it up a bit. I mean, I'm in no rush, but I definitely want to get there by the end of the year.

Ahlan wa sahlan, my dear friends! This has been one crazy month for #Aransha and there’s a lot to unpack. So...whats happened?
Aran’sha was nominated for best newcomer - meeting all the other nominees, swapping stories and the award ceremony was a real treat. And while Aran’sha did not win first place in the end, I want to thank everyone who voted for me (and the whole community) from the bottom of my heart.

The journey to this point has been one of passion and perseverance, and seeing my work acknowledged in such way is truly a high point in my worldbuilding journey.
I am deeply grateful for the support from each of you in this community and all the folks at home. Your encouragement and feedback have not only propelled my creativity but have also refined the stories I create. This award is as much yours as it is mine.

YONDERVERSE? BEST WORLD?!
I genuinely just stared and cried when I heard my name. I cannot believe the Yonderverse has been crowned Best World. I've been on World Anvil for three or so years now, and before I had *zero* skills or experience writing anything. My world has grown so much, I've grown so much, and I've gained so many beloved friends that I talk to on a daily basis, that I can't imagine being without.
I distinctly remember, around when I first joined WA, seeing people win accolades, Summer Camp prompts, and other events, and me not even thinking that I could possibly win them. As time went on, I improved (even winning Most Improved Worldbuilder in SC23), and yet winning anything in the Worldbuilding Awards seemed so far out of reach. This truly would not have happened if it wasn't for the incredible community around this website, with talents from across the world, all kinds of backgrounds. I've learnt how to express myself through writing and that's something I'll always be grateful for.
I am also so sorry I couldn't attend the livestream! I had urgent family business to tend to, but I still made enough time to scream my sincerest congratulations to all of the winners. So this counts as my "acceptance speech" of sorts. I don't know if this little journal post is just a complete emotional mess of words, but I wanted to write something xD
Love you all, huge congrats to the other winners, and I hope everyone has a great day!

Book Progress Update #3 (and some other updates)
Hello everyone,
First off, I just want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who voted for me in the #WAWA2024. I'm genuinely touched to have been included on the shortlists. Honestly, writing is something I do in my spare time, and I entered the competition just for a bit of fun. To discover that people genuinely appreciate my work is both exhilarating and a bit surreal. I'm overjoyed and deeply grateful, especially to be recognized alongside such incredibly talented creators. Thank you all so much! :)
Now, onto the book updates. The last few weeks have been particularly hectic at work, which has meant slower progress on the book front—I've reached about 125 pages. It's not as much as I hoped, but I've also taken some time to revisit earlier chapters. I've been tweaking the pacing, correcting errors, and refining parts of the narrative to ensure it flows better.
Looking ahead, things should be a bit quieter at work this week, which means I can dedicate more time to the book and further develop the world of Nexarium Arcanis (that title is still a work in progress). I've brainstormed several new concepts that I'm excited to explore within our cosy little Grimdark Galaxy.

Stormwatch Forecast: WAWA Finalists, Last hours for Voting, off to Europe!
As the title of this post hints towards, the last few weeks have been a whirlwind for me, trying to get ready for my study abroad in Barcelona; I didn't even realize that it was already the last day for WAWA voting!
If you haven't yet cast those fabulous votes, then I'd love to invite you to check out the three finalists I have in the running, and also just serve as one more reminder to check out all the amazing entries and vote accordingly!
As for me, this update post will probably be pretty short and sweet. I'm still packing and getting ready and dealing with life stuff of things like my partner's car dying and trying to figure out how to help with that before I leave in a couple days xD I am very excited for my trip though, it's going to be a nice vacation from crazy hard semesters and an opportunity to see parts of the world that I've never been to! I am going to take so many pictures and look at so much architecture :D Most of my time will be spent in Barcelona where my schoolwork and accommodations are, but I plan on making some trips out of the city here and there too -- I have the opportunity, I wanna do it! Any fun recommendations? :D

Well time got away from me, so I will have to do this briefly.
If youre reading this because you already follow me, you may know that I was absolutely blown away by the nominations I received for a few of the categories. If youre new here, hello new person, nice to meet you!
In any case I wanted to take this opportunity to briefly thank all of you for this amazing support. It already is the highest honor for me to be considered a part of the few who made it onto the shortlists. There are so many amazing creators out there and to count myself among them is honestly still very surreal to me.

A showcase of our most beautiful work for #WAWA2024
As with all of World Anvil's beautiful worlds, there isn't just one article which encapsulates the care we've put our layouts, the CSS, the BBCode trickery, the writing, and the illustration. Barron, Hiive, and myself have worked together to make articles that POP — sometimes for their simplicity, sometimes for their grandeur, and sometimes for their quirks. Generative imagery has certainly extended the possibilities, but there's nothing great that effort and expertise can't make even better.
We've got dozens of widgets, 12 unique article-level styles, and the work of several artists on display.

March Update
Howdy again. #monthlyUpdate
What I've been
Well, things stat to complicate, like an endless stream of crisis, meaning I didn't have much time to focus on writing. There's no unofficial challenges I succeeded, and so all my writing goals from last month's plan.
To be fair, I didn't publish anything except My Worldbuilding Awards 2024's Entries and the additional update on my lovely timeline for such.

April Plan
April is consider the hot month in my place. Thankfully, lots of water splashing festival, you know what I mean, may cool the weather down for a bit. As I want to be chilled and relax during this time, writing will be a bit less stressful and more focused.

In personal news, I am in the thick of it for my own architecture right now -- the end of the semester is fast approaching and I am almost through the hardest semester in my entire Masters. Two-ish weeks to go!
In the brief moments of reprieve I've been doing some doodling for some God-husk redesigns, and also brainstorming and theorycrafting some future-Cathedris fun things like spaceships >:) I post about em over on my Discord Server, if you ever want to take a look!

Before the voting period closes for #WAWA2024 I would like to reshare one of my favorite articles which is also my entry for the pillars of progress :)
Magic in Niorath explains, as the name would suggest, how magic works in my world. This goes from how it orginated to how it was developed further over time and the different forms that were discovered.

The humonguous world trees which once covered the world, and of which some are still home to unyielding alien wood elves.
A religion heavily inspired by slavic / norse and celtic roots, Ragnarök has happened, and the gods fight for the last world which was not devoured by the Worldsnake.

I'd like to share the articles that I've entered for The World Anvil World Building Awards. It feels strange to self-promote, but I am proud of the articles that I wrote last year. Hoping you enjoy a quick read! Kaesta - The Main Protagonist for my upcoming novel. She's a survivor, a programmer, and a world builder!The Syntax War - When androids rose up against their human creators, The Syntax War was the swift and brutal conflict that decimated the human colonies throughout the galaxy.
The Escapist's Fantasy] - This is the small family-sized starship that Kaesta and Asimov fled from The Syntax War in.
The Cosmos - The inhabitants of Akir have three competing views of The Cosmos, but they all agree their world is not real.
The Gnomes - These tiny folk travel through The Hatway to stay safe from predators. They're in the midst of a Prank War with the newly arrived Pixies.
Rastus, The Explorer - After losing his hat, Rastus was locked outside of The Hatway for 50 years. He's become a well-known explorer and author among the Gnomes.
The Astral Watchtower - is a unique megolothic pyramid. It is one of the holiest places on the world of Akir for the Dwarves. They keep a copy of The Dreamstone Codex there along with astronomical records.

State of the Manifold - March 24 (Manifold Prompts Edition)
Howdy all,
Spring rains have finally come to bless my dusty little corner of the American west, and that means it’s time, once again, for the monthly State of the Manifold article. I’ve been busy this month, so let’s get into the updates straight away!
March saw the creation of the #UnofficialChallenge challenge, and, while I had hoped to participate in more of them, I did manage to complete two submissions as of the time of this posting. I took an unconventional approach to Stormbril’s #Marchitecture challenge and submitted an article about an orbital cycler; after all, in space, the difference between a stationary and a moving object is a matter of frame of reference, no? For Jester%’s #OccupationalMarch challenge, I broke with my usual tradition of BCGR-based or system-agnostic writing and posted an article about a custom D&D class I cooked up all the way back in the dim antediluvian epochs of 2014. This former article is definitely worth a look if you’re a tabletop roleplayer because it contains playable stats in not one, but two, different roleplaying systems. Come check them out:
Another thing I did over the course of March was make my submissions for your consideration in the World Anvil Worldbuilding Awards. I don’t have a compiled #WAWA2024 list as such, but these submissions are all up on the WA blog page for the contest. I encourage you to go and have a look at what everyone has submitted because there’s a lot of good stuff out there. And hey, if you see a few Manifold Sky or Sealed Kingdoms articles that strike your fancy, stop on by and consider dropping a like or a vote my way!
In other news, the annual #AdventureApril challenge is nearly here. I always enjoy Adventure April because, aside from eliciting some of what I consider to be my best work here, it means that WA suddenly blooms with scores of high-quality articles with interactive content, from basic TTRPG adventures to chose-your-own-adventure ‘mazes’ with varying levels of custom CSS. I’m already marinating a couple of ideas for a challenge article that may or may not be inspired by a recent revisit to Rollercoaster Tycoon 2, but we’ll see how that turns out. Here’s a couple of past submissions I’m particularly proud of:

A Taste of Outer Space, consider Dumplings in Space for the Hearts & Minds Award!
Dumplings aren't just delicious, they're a symbol of unity. Every corner of the Solar System has their own delightful dumplings, and they're a perfect bite-sized zero G food. They've become a symbol of becoming an interplanetary citizen. This is one of the articles I'm the proudest of, I really love the ways food can be transformative. Extra bonus, next time you have a dumpling, you can think of how you're a citizen of space too!

World-Building Thoughts #3 - Crafting Living Traditions
As #WAWA2024 unfolds, I've taken the plunge and submitted a selection of my lore articles. I don't expect to win much, but that's not really my goal—participation itself is a rewarding experience, not least for the visibility it brings to one's work sometimes. This occasion has prompted me to reflect on the themes and topics that attract me as a world-builder. Today, I want to delve into an aspect of world-building that particularly fascinates me: Traditions.
Traditions are not just background elements. Quite the opposite, crafting fictional traditions is an exercise that tests a world-builder's skill over a range of topics: history, cultural evolution, and the development of ethnicities, to name a few. To really get into what a tradition is, one has to ask themselves several questions. For example:
- - What are the origins of this tradition?
- - Why did it begin, and how has it evolved over time?
- - Has it spread to neighboring cultures, and if so, how has it been adapted?
- - What meanings do contemporary societies attach to this tradition, and how have these interpretations shifted through the ages?

Rising from the ashes, consider the Nomads of Mercury for the Rise of Nations Award!
The terminator nomads were one of the first things I knew would be in Solaris. A tough people making the most of a hard situation, with many different approaches (scavenging the collapsed cities, trading with outsiders, raiding supply convoys, etc) Now that I reflect on them, and their weird insectoid aesthetics, I really do think they're my love letter to the Ashlanders of Morrowind. Isn't it neat how our worldbuilding is sometimes amalgation of all the things we love?
